Most of the housing in Bergen is single-family and small multi-family, and most of it has a full basement. That puts the water heater, the main shutoff, the sewer cleanout and, often, a sump pit in the same room — which makes a basement the place a failure shows first, and the place it does the most damage if nobody goes down there.

Older houses near the river have galvanised supply and cast-iron waste like their neighbours across the bridge. Newer construction further west is mostly copper and plastic.
